Baby Dummy

Baby Dummy

The vast majority of babies (probably around 65%) will be happy with cuddling and breastfeeding and won't ever need a baby dummy or pacifier.

However, if your baby is usually a little fussy, she may want to suck on something for comfort, to stop her crying, or even to put her to sleep. If you're going to breastfeed, some baby experts hypothesise that a dummy or pacifier can cause your baby to get what is called “nipple confusion”. Sucking on a dummy, pacifier or a teat is quite different to breastfeeding and swapping from one to the other does seem to confuse some babies. Other babies seem to handle both the dummy and the breast with ease. It may be prudent to wait until you feel
breastfeeding  your baby is well established before trying a dummy or pacifier.  A problem MAY also arise where your newborn baby becomes used to the easier sucking action on the baby dummy - and will not want to persist with putting in the effort that is required to suck at the breast. As a consequence, your baby may not get enough to drink, and breastfeeding may be abandoned - and that would be a terrible shame.

If you do choose to use a baby dummy for your baby, look for an orthodontic model where possible, as they are better for developing teeth and gums. Latex dummies are softer and more flexible than silicone, but they don't last as long, and latex contains harmful toxins like PVC – stick with silicone baby dummies as they are non-toxic and BPA-Free. The trick is to purchase a few so you can rotate them often and sterilise the spare ones that are not in use (some come with holders to keep them clean when not in use). Inspect dummies regularly and replace them at the first sign of wear.
